Post-Operative Instructions for IV Sedation

Activity

Please monitor your child carefully for the rest of the day following surgery. Even though he/she seems fully awake, your child may lack their usual coordination and need help getting around. Most likely your child will want to rest. Do not allow your child to return to school or attend activities following the surgery.

Drinking/Eating

The first meal should be something soft like soup, noodles, ice cream, crackers, etc. Your child’s mouth may be sore for the first 2–3 days and a soft bland diet may be tolerated more easily. However, your child may eat solid foods if he/she desires after 24 hours. Drinking liquids throughout the day and staying hydrated will help with a speedy recovery.

Numbness

Your child’s mouth may be numb for 2-4 hours from the local anesthetic that was used. Be careful that your child does not bite, pinch, suck, or scratch his/her lip, cheek, or tongue.

Care of the Mouth

It is important that you continue to help brush your child’s teeth normally. You may use a wet washcloth instead of a toothbrush to wipe the teeth and gums. If the teeth and gums are clean and free of plaque, the gums will heal within 10-14 days – helping to prevent additional pain and discomfort.

What to Expect

It is common for a slight amount of bleeding (oozing of pink or red colored saliva) following treatment.

  • Crowns on Back Teeth (White or Silver) – The gums will be sore because these fit below the gums. Avoid hard, sticky candy (e.g. fruit snacks, Fruit Roll-Ups, Skittles) for at least 24 hours to prevent the crowns from coming off and/or causing more cavities.

  • Extractions – Avoid spitting or using a straw for 24 hours. If the area begins to bleed again, have your child bite on the provided gauze for 5–10 minutes, and the pressure will stop the bleeding.

  • Crowns on Front Teeth – If these were placed on the front teeth, avoid biting on apples, carrots, corn on the cob, etc. Hard foods like these will need to be cut up and chewed with the back teeth.

  • Tooth Colored Fillings or Sealants – Avoid sticky foods and candy as the material can pop out.

Pain

It is important that your child be kept comfortable during the healing time following dental treatment. You may give your child Children’s Ibuprofen or Tylenol every 6 hours if needed (unless an allergy to these medications is known). This will help reduce soreness, discomfort, and possible swelling following treatment. We commonly see children who refuse to eat or drink when they are having severe mouth pain. If this should occur, please call our office.

Infinity Pediatric Dentistry – Sedation Policy and Agreement

At Infinity Pediatric Dentistry, our goal is to provide every child with safe, compassionate, and personalized experiences. For some children, in-office sedation offers the best way to complete necessary treatment safely and comfortably. Because these appointments require extensive preparation, staff coordination, and limited monthly availability, we maintain clear policies to ensure that every sedation spot is used efficiently and that as many children as possible can receive care. Infinity Pediatric Dentistry is the only office in the greater Lafayette Area currently offering this level of in-office sedation service.

Deposit Policy

  • A $250 deposit is required to reserve a sedation appointment. This deposit will be applied toward the total cost of the child’s treatment on the day of the procedure. If the total cost of treatment is less than $250, the full treatment cost will serve as the deposit amount.

  • This deposit applies to Infinity Pediatric Dentistry only. The sedation team (PDAA) maintains its own deposit and payment policies that are not affiliated with Infinity Pediatric Dentistry.

Payment Policy

  • The remaining balance of the planned treatment is due two (2) weeks prior to the scheduled procedure date.  Our office will reach out to collect payment at that time.

  • Failure to pay the full balance within a timely manner may result in the cancellation of the appointment and forfeiture of the deposit.

  • Should the treatment plan change during the sedation, additional funds may be due at time-of-service.

  • Any refunds will be credited following insurance disbursement (if applicable).

Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy

  • Cancelations within 30 days of the scheduled procedure date will cause forfeiture of the deposit.

  • Rescheduling will cause loss of the original deposit and will require a new $250 deposit to secure a future sedation date.

  • We kindly ask families to consider their schedules, barring extenuating circumstances, before confirming sedation appointments.

NOTICE OF $50 TREATMENT DEPOSIT

Please be advised that a $50 deposit is required to reserve your dental treatment appointment. This deposit will be applied toward the cost of your treatment on the day of service.

Deposits are non-refundable for cancellations made with less than 24 hours notice or missed appointments.
